Service Opportunities

Kenya August 2008

We return this year for the third time to Kenya where we will be working with our host Pastor Michael Nthiga and an organizing committee of 20 multi-denominational pastors. We plan to spend one week working in the slums and villages of the Mbeere district 100 miles Northeast of Nairobi. The second week will be spent in villages southwest of Nairobi with an optional Safari in the Maasai Mara.  The primary objective of this project will be to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ by providing free healthcare treatment for those in need regardless of creed or tribal origin.

Using local translators part of the team will register patients and record simple patient histories on patient routing slips for later diagnosis by a team medical staff member. Christian witnessing is encouraged by those team members who are comfortable in doing so. Other members of the team will work with local translators in triage where blood pressure, pulse, glucose test results and other vital signs will be recorded along with further patient history. A third group of the team will work in the exam rooms with local translators where the MDs will make their diagnosis and record the recommended medical prophylaxis for the patient. The final group will work in the pharmacy with local translators where the prescribed medicines will be prepared and packaged along with instructions to the patient for when and how to take their prescriptions. We expect to treat over 2000 patients during this project!

Care Providers Needed : MDs, PAs, NPs, RNs, Dentists, Pharmacists, and other healthcare related personnel. In addition medical students and non-medical personnel with a heart for the people of Kenya are needed as support members of the team.

Independent Donors Needed:  To contribute to help offset our cost of $4000 to supply medical supplies for this project. ($30,000 wholesale value)

Logistics

Not included are passport fees and immunization fees. $200 is due along with our application before May 1, 2008. ($100 is non-refundable). The balance is due 30 days before departure. All deadlines are firm.
