Service Opportunities

El Salvador

El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that provided for military and political reforms.

Despite being the smallest country geographically in Central America, El Salvador currently has the third largest economy with a per capita income that is roughly half that of Costa Rica and Panama, but double that of Nicaragua. Although the country has been rapidly improving over the past decade, there are still large areas of the population that live below the poverty line and where there is limited general medical care to combat the many domestic diseases prevalent there. HHH is developing plans to provide annual short-term medical teams for the remote areas to assist them in providing on-going medical care on a long term basis.

A small exploratory team is being formed in July 2010 to begin the process. We need several dedicated medical professionals to work with the team leader, Diane Devos-Schmidt: ddevosschmidt@yahoo.com

The exploratory team will be visiting four villages: San Jose Buena Vista and Brisas de Ville on the Guaza volcano,  and Guycume and Colon. They also plan to visit the homeless shelter in San Salvador, the site of mass flooding, poverty and crime.

The team will stay in a guarded compound in San Salvador called Casa Concordia.  Pastor Matias Bonilla will be our in country host contact.  This is their rainy season with daily thunder and lightening storms,

Most of the people people we will be treating are refugees who fled their land to avoid death during the civil war 10 years ago. They are rebuilding their lives and their land.  Their faith is amazing, they were recently hit with flooding that took out their crops and soil.  They were a self supporting people living off the land and selling corn and beans. They are re-planting currently.  They are generous with their lives, their love and are so grateful to be touched, heard and cared for.

For those interested in spending a couple of extra days of R&R. We can help you arrange a visit to the colorful fishing village of La Libertad  on the Prisitine Pacific Coastline of El Salvador just 90 minutes by bus away. We highly recommend this side trip if you have time. Just let us know before we book your tickets.
